Never in my lifetime would I ever have thought our beloved country Kenya would find itself in a curfew, or in a looming lockdown. The Nation has been filled with fear, anxiety, frustration, and it feels like there is unending uncertainty. Families have lost their loved ones. Businesses have reported huge losses and are on the verge of closing down. Salaries have been slashed and people have lost jobs. Families are breaking due to financial constraints and infidelity catalysed by the curfew. It is possible not to see anything good. Allow me to be a source of encouragement to you and your family. Catalyst
In December 7, 1941, on a Sunday morning, just before 08.00, there was an surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service upon the United States, against the naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu. Among other things, battle ships, submarines sinking, aircrafts damaged and destroyed, thousands of soldiers and civilians died and scores were injured. Sadly the attack led to the entrance of the United States into World War II. The then President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, he proclaimed that day as “a date which will live in infamy.” It is said that Admiral Chester Nimitz, the Commander of the Pacific Fleet, upon visiting the harbour after the attack, he saw that there was a spirit of despair, dejection and defeat. He went further and said were it not for the mistakes the enemy made, more Americans would have died, and he also acknowledged that God had taken care of America.
Just like the Pearl Harbor attack which was not anticipated, Covid-19 has become tragic and has led to a spirit of despair, dejection and defeat. We must ask ourselves the question, “To whom will I run to?” When the Lord delivered David from the hand of all his enemies and from that of Saul, he wrote a song of praise. In 2 Samuel 22:7, “In my distress, I called to the Lord, I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice, my cry came to his ears.” In vs 3, David calls God “the horn of my salvation”. He is referring to the strength and defensive protection animals have in their horns. God helped David overcome his enemies and rescued him from his foes.
In Proverbs 18:10, the Bible says “The Name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe.” The name of the Lord is the strong tower, the righteous run to it for protection, for security, for rest when they feel weary. Its strength comes from 1) the titles- fortress, deliverer, shield, savior, 2) in His attributes like merciful, loving, 3) in His covenant; ..I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly and 4) in His promises; He will never leave us nor forsake us. Through faith, prayer, devotion to God and dependence on him, the righteous can continually run to it and find safety. Righteousness is only found in Christ Jesus. In 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.” Become righteous by accepting Jesus today!
In the midst of this uncertainty brought by Covid-19, my encouragement is that we choose to run to God, He is the very present help in time of need. We can choose to run and live in his tower, for safety and security, rather than choosing to live outside of it.
As for me and my family, we will make the wise choice today, to find true refuge in the strong Tower, the Lord our God!
Will you?
